Chapter 03, Verse 31

श्रीभगवानुवाच:

ये मे मतमिदं नित्यमनुतिष्ठन्ति मानवाः |

श्रद्धावन्तोऽनसूयन्तो मुच्यन्ते तेऽपि कर्मभिः || 3.31||

ye me matam idam nityam anutisthanti manavah |

sraddhavanto nasuyanto mucyante te pi karmabhih || 3.31 ||

Translation

            “One who execute his duties according to My injunctions and who follows this teaching faithfully without envy, becomes free from the bondage of fruitive actions.”

Context of the Verse:

            In Chapter 3 (Karma Yoga), Krishna is explaining to Arjuna the importance of performing one’s duties (karma) without attachment. Here, Krishna assures that anyone – not just Arjuna – who sincerely follows His guidance, with faith and without criticizing the teaching, will also be liberated from the entanglement of karma. He is encouraging faith, discipline, and non-critical acceptance of divine instructions as a path to freedom.

  • Faith (sraddha) is essential to benefit from spiritual teachings.
  • Non-envious attitude (anasuya) is necessary – one should not criticize or find faults in divine wisdom.

Relevance to Arjuna:

            Krishna is reminding Arjuna that trust and sincere execution of his duty (as a warrior, in this case) will free him from the karmic consequences. It encourages Arjuna to act without fear or hesitation, with a pure mind, trusting Krishna’s words completely.

Explanation:

            So now Krishna is telling here using a very important word. Ultimately, we want freedom from the reactions. Because of Karma, we are getting bodies and bodies give us misery, material bodies. So, if you act in such a way, you will be free. But sometimes because we are all envious here, everybody is in material world. He is envious of God. He or she is envious. So, Krishna is telling who follows My injunctions without envy because envy can come. Oh, I should give everything to you. What kind of God Krishna is too much demanding. But we should understand this demand is not of a dictator, it is that of a lover. Just like in traditional families in India, wives would not work. They would take the responsibility of educating. the children, which is very important work. Now the children are getting spoiled and as we know, the consciousness of a person is very important. Who is cooking the food? So, these very important tasks they would do and actually working at home is very nice. And now after this pandemic, people don’t want to return to office. Even in the offices of the best companies. Because nobody likes to leave home. And what is the best job then spending time with the people you love, educating your children and taking care of them? So, this very important task was given. Now people started neglecting this task of a homemaker. Now the women are going out and exploitation is happening, abuse is happening. Thus, the Vedas still, if woman goes out, then it is very risky. How much protection you can give. This abuse is bound to happen. So, women should always be protected. This is the version in the Vedas. So just like a beautiful wife, as soon as the husband gets salary, she would demand give everything to me and husband would lovingly give everything to her.

            This is the demand Krishna is having. Krishna, what is the need if Krishna in death of wealth. No, He is so much loving us. He knows unless they develop loving relationship, revive this relationship for me they will not be satisfied. So, he wants to rekindle this loving relationship. So, he’s asking give it to me and thus we will have a loving relationship. You will develop love for me.

            So, we should not become envious Krishna ‘s dictator. He’s telling just think of me, sing for me and glorify me. So, Krishna is just training us how we can again rekindle loving relationships. So, one who follows these injunctions without envy of me. Then they will become free from the bondage of work. So, by doing work, you become free from the bondage of work. This is called Buddhi Yoga or Bhakti yoga.

ये त्वेतदभ्यसूयन्तो नानुतिष्ठन्ति मे मतम् |

सर्वज्ञानविमूढांस्तान्विद्धि नष्टानचेतसः || 3.32||

Translation

            “But those who driven by jealous envies, neglect these teachings and do not practice them constantly, are to be accounted deprived of all knowledge, deluded and lost in ignorance and bondages.”

Context of the Verse:

            In Chapter 3 (Karma Yoga), Krishna describes how action by man must focus on the Divine (not on results) and man’s purpose in this world. In this verse, Krishna is cautioning us about disregarding spiritual knowledge and its consequences, our spiritual fall. Having counselled what is the proper course (to do actions without attachment), He then warns that those who slight fully comment upon or disregard this instruction would perish; and tells Arjuna to come to the laws of his own being.

            This verse illustrates that faith and reverence in God’s knowledge are fundamental to spiritual success. Neglect now means not only intellectual failure, but complete spiritual insensibility.

  • Reproof against Hidden Knowledge leads to Destruction: The mockers of or envious towards spiritual teachings fall into ignorance.
  • Meaning of Faith: An open heart to understand and practice the teachings is essential.

  • The Consequences of Disobedience: Failing to heed sound doctrine has outcomes-costly ones, both spiritual and moral.

Relevance to Arjuna:

            What Arjuna is being urged to do:

  • Believe “whatever Miss Krishna says, is certainly true”, with no suspicion.
  • Learn about the severe ramifications of disregard or negative criticism regarding divine orders.
  • Remain established in the path of Dharma (righteous duty) by working without any self‐interest.
  • Don’t be arrogant, lest he become conceited and eschew useful advice in Favor of his own common sense.

            Krishna is ultimately saying: “Don’t overanalyse because of arrogance or Imitated logic- have faith and move.

Explanation:

But if somebody is envious, I don’t want to regulate myself as per somebody Krishna or a book. I will have my own life. When Krishna is telling he is doomed, he will suffer. Just like a small child, if he does not take the advice of the parents, it is very dangerous for him. Somebody will kidnap, he will eat anything, spoil his health, small children, they take some times naphthalene balls thinking it as sugar candy. So, if the children don’t listen, the strict advice of their parents, their health, career, everything would be lost.

Chapter 03, Verse 33

सदृशं चेष्टते स्वस्याः प्रकृतेर्ज्ञानवानपि।

प्रकृतिं यान्ति भूतानि निग्रहः किं करिष्यति॥3.33॥

prakritim yanti bhutani nigrahah kim karisyati ॥3.33॥

Translation

            “Not even a man of knowledge acts as he wishes, since everyone acts in accordance with his nature. What is repression good for?”

Context of the Verse:

            Shri Krishna is stressing the great power of prakriti (what one is born with). He’s reminding Arjun that a person with knowledge, even the truth, deals in accordance with their own nature. Each creature, whether wise or foolish, follows his nature. It is therefore-is simply ridiculous to try to hold back or damp down this attitude, this tendency-and stamp it out without understanding the tendency, without transforming the tendency.

Key Teachings in This Verse:

  • Power of Nature (Prakriti): Our inherent nature has a significant impact on our actions, thoughts, and conduct.
  • Even Wisdom Has Bounds Without Transformation: Mere intellectual apprehension is no automatic conqueror of one’s internal promptings or Vasanas (impressions).
  • Resistance is Futile: To try to force tendencies into suppression without cleansing and transformation within does not work for real spiritual growth.
  • The Significance of Self-Awareness: Real spiritual practice is about becoming aware of, knowing, and eventually purifying one’s nature; it is not a matter of exerting control over your nature.

Relevance to Arjuna:

  • Arjuna’s Dilemma: Arjuna is a Kshatriya by disposition. His Dharma (duty) is to war for justice. Such a person will only have internal conflicts if he was suppressing his natural warrior spirit.
  • Krishna’s counsel: Krishna is exhorting Arjuna to act as per his Svabhava (essential nature) as opposed to renouncing his prescribed task due to a temporary befuddlement.

            So, Krishna is warning Arjuna. Now you want to leave fight repression will not accomplish anything unless the heart is cleansed. So, use your tendencies in my service.
