Translation

“O Arjuna, I have described this knowledge to you with regard to Sankhya (analytical wisdom). And here, listen as I share the explanation through the path of Yoga. It is when you do this that you will be liberated from the shackles of karma.”

Context of the Verse

Krishna then moves the discussion from Sankhya (Jnana Yoga – knowledge of the Self) to Yoga (Karma Yoga – selfless action).

Key Teachings in This Verse

Sankhya (Knowledge Path); Krishna explained the eternal soul earlier.

Yoga (Path of Action); performing your duty without any attachment to the outcome (Karma Yoga).

Kingdom of Freedom; to attain liberation, we must act with awareness and detachment from the fruit of our actions.

Bigger perspective; Krishna says to Arjuna that mere knowledge about the above, intellectual or otherwise, is of no good unless one applies it through selfless action (Yoga).

Relevance to Arjuna

By embracing Karma Yoga, Krishna asks Arjuna to divert from philosophical knowledge towards its practical application, thus enabling him to act without subsequent karmic bondage.

Explanation

O son of Pritha. So, when you do that by intelligence, you are freed from the bondage of works.

Sankhya means analysis, an analytical study of the body and spirit. The soul has been explained very nicely by Lord Krishna and this is what Lord Krishna is explaining as Sankhya now after a very nice analysis of one’s existence. Completely different from the body Lord Krishna is explaining the second level. It is not sufficient just to know that I am not the body. If you understand that you are not the body, I will not be affected by the distress of the body, but I do not want just freedom from stress and miseries, I want positive happiness and pleasure in life.

So how can the soul have positive pleasure and, happiness in life when it engages in the service of the Super Soul and, gets connected with the Super Soul? And that is called Yoga. The word is very famous, but people do not know what the actual meaning of Yoga is. Do we think that throwing our hands and legs around in the air is called Yoga? The word Yoga actually comes from ‘Yujdhato’; Yuj means to link or to connect, so the process of linking the individual soul with the Super Soul is called Yoga. What is this linking? It is not any mechanical linking, just like a man and a woman are linked in a relationship. So we have a relationship with God. We have forgotten that relationship. So when a person is able to revive his relationship, once he is out of this bodily concept of life by following the spiritual discipline under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master, our memory of our eternal relationship with God is revived. God is eternal. We are eternal and our relationship is also eternal. So when we are able to revive that relationship and engage in the service of God, then that is called Yoga. Now here there are various kinds of Yoga systems described in the Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna is explaining a very advanced form of yoga practice which is called ‘Buddhi Yoga. Yoga is a ladder. Not everyone is expected to be on the top rung of the ladder. So as per the capacity of individuals, different rungs and, different processes of Yoga have been recommended. But a person should not get stuck. At any level, one should keep on progressing. Karma, Yoga, Dhyan Yoga, Raja Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga. Finally, a person should come to the level of Bhakti Yoga which is the topmost yoga system also known by the name Buddhi Yoga. Buddhi Yoga means doing Yoga, not by changing your external circumstances as the Yogas and Asanas, Yoga Asanas and the Pranayama which are part of Hatha Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga which is normally taken as Yoga. In that you have to do external adjustments, you have to leave your house and family to go to the Himalayas or a secret place, and then sit there alone and, stop your eating. Stop your activities. Some external arrangements have to be made. But this Buddhi Yoga is such an advanced process. There is no need for any external arrangement. Using the same activity you are an educator. You can continue your profession as an educator. You are a businessman. You can continue being a businessman. Arjun was a fighter. He could continue being a fighter at the same time. Do Yoga. Establish your relationship with the supreme soul. How? Simply by manipulating your intelligence. This is called Buddhi Yoga.

So, this very advanced form of Yoga, which Lord Krishna, will now explain to Arjuna. And although this is the most advanced, this is also the most practical because being situated in one’s own position in one’s own occupational duty, one can perform and attain success in spiritual life.

Translation

“This path of Karma Yoga never goes in vain; there is no evil result in this.” This Dharma, however slight in practice, frees one from the great fear.

Context of the Verse

And decisively unique, you will not find it in any material pursuit.

Key Teachings in This Verse

Nothing is ever wasted; in spiritual practice, no matter how small or incremental any changes are, they are all steps forward, and never efforts wasted.

InNo negative reactions; all actions done in the right frame of mind (detachment and devotion) will not bear sin or suffering.

Even a little effort helps; a person is protected from the worst dangers through even a little Karma Yoga effort.

            Fear of death and rebirth

            Fear of losing everything

The downside to our fear of failure in spiritual progress

Relevance to Arjuna

Realizing that Karma Yoga is not a reason for Arjuna to become complacent, Krishna gives him a powerful message of encouragement. No matter how life may unfold you have your marching orders when it comes to your dreams.

Explanation

So, Lord Krishna explains that, if you follow this process of yoga, you may be able to finish only 5% in this life. There is no loss. In the next life you will begin from that point from 5% in the material world. It is not possible to finish the first 2 years of your college in this life and then continue from the 3rd in the next life. It is not possible, except in this process of Buddhi Yoga. There is no loss or diminution from the same point. You can continue in the next life and keep on continuing until you reach perfection.

And it is told, even though you have just a small beginning in this path, it saves you from the greatest danger. What is the greatest danger? People think Oh, if I lose my job, that is a great danger. If I lose my family members, that is a great danger. Yes, these are dangerous situations. But anyway, we are going to lose all of these things. And after losing all our relatives, all the money name, fame, and position that we have if we degrade to. So, now there is a lot of talk about data, data colonization. We should not give our data to others. We will lose our independence. People care a lot about their independence.  Independence Day is a national holiday. It is celebrated. People take pride in independence. Nobody wants to become dependent. Everyone wants equal rights. But what if after the human form of life, we degrade to animal species and become dogs, all independence is gone? We become domestic animals. All independence is gone and if you don’t become a domestic animal life is much more horrible. Always. We are fearful that somebody can kill us. Somebody can attack me suddenly, fearing that, ultimately somebody will kill me and we are finished.

So, this is the most dangerous fear. Just imagine you are out there and there are all killers around you. Anybody can come and kill you anytime. How full of fear your life would be, this is the greatest fear of life. If I degrade to an animal species, Unfortunately, there is no knowledge. Just like children, we are attached to materialistic pursuits and we are not able to think that nature has given us this human body. Some species also have animal bodies. If I become an animal, how horrible my life would be. But if we perform Buddhi Yoga, even a small beginning saves us from degrading to an animal species. A human form is guaranteed and a person begins from the point where he stopped in the previous life.
